Warm-Hot Intergalactic Medium (WHIM)
The Warm-Hot Intergalactic Medium (WHIM) is a shock-heated, highly ionized plasma at temperatures of 10⁵ to 10⁷ K and baryon overdensities of δ_b ≈ 5–200 that threads the filaments of the cosmic web. Produced as diffuse intergalactic gas falls into dark matter filaments over the past 10 billion years, the WHIM holds 30–40% of all low-redshift cosmic baryons.
Physical Mechanism & Dynamics
At high redshift (z > 2), most cosmic baryons reside in the cool, photoionized Lyman-alpha forest (T ~ 10⁴ K). As cosmic structure grows via gravitational instability at z < 2, gas converging onto cosmic web sheets and cylindrical filaments passes through accretion shocks at 100–500 km/s. This converts gravitational potential energy into thermal energy (T ≈ 10⁵–10⁷ K), collisionally stripping hydrogen to nearly 100% ionization (neutral fraction x_HI < 10⁻⁵) and rendering the gas nearly invisible at optical wavelengths.
Because the WHIM's electron density is extremely low (n_e ≈ 10⁻⁶ to 10⁻⁴ cm⁻³), its thermal X-ray emission (∝ n_e²) is exceedingly faint. Instead, observers probe the WHIM via: (1) far-ultraviolet O VI (1032/1038 Å) and broad Lyman-alpha (BLAs) absorption in HST/COS spectra (probing T ~ 10⁵–10⁵·⁵ K), (2) X-ray absorption lines of helium-like O VII (21.60 Å) and hydrogen-like O VIII (18.97 Å) toward bright blazars, (3) stacked thermal Sunyaev-Zel'dovich (tSZ) Compton-y bridges between cluster pairs, and (4) fast radio burst (FRB) dispersion measures.
Quantitatively, this mechanism is governed by Filament Accretion Shock Post-Shock Temperature (k_B T_shock = (3 / 16) μ m_p v_infall^2 ≈ 1.4 × 10⁶ K × (v_infall / 300 km s⁻¹)^2). Rankine-Hugoniot strong-shock relation showing that filamentary infall speeds of 150–600 km/s heat intergalactic baryons into the 10⁵·⁵–10⁷ K WHIM regime.

Observational Evidence & How Scientists Know
Nicastro et al. (2018) reported two intervening O VII absorbers (z = 0.355 and z = 0.434) in a 1.8-megasecond XMM-Newton spectrum of the blazar 1ES 1553+113, while de Graaff et al. (2019), Tanimura et al. (2019, 2020), and Macquart et al. (2020) independently confirmed the WHIM electron column via Planck tSZ filament stacking, ROSAT/eROSITA soft X-ray stacking, and localized FRB dispersion measures.
Across reference datasets (Planck 2018 Cosmological Parameters (PR3), SIMBAD Astronomical Database (CDS)), quantitative benchmarks for warm-hot intergalactic medium (whim) are anchored by: WHIM temperature & overdensity (T = 10⁵–10⁷ K; ρ_b / ρ̄_b ≈ 5–200, via Cosmological hydrodynamic simulations (IllustrisTNG, EAGLE)); Share of z = 0 cosmic baryon budget (30%–40% of Ω_b, via Combined UV O VI, X-ray O VII, tSZ & FRB DM census); Diagnostic X-ray resonance transitions (O VII Heα (21.60 Å / 574 eV), O VIII Lyα (18.97 Å / 654 eV), via XMM-Newton RGS & Chandra LETG grating spectroscopy); Stacked filament Compton-y parameter (y ≈ (0.6–1.2) × 10⁻⁸, via Planck + ACT tSZ stacking between SDSS/BOSS galaxy pairs).
