Cosmic Inventory: Baryons, Dark Matter & Λ

What is the universe made of by mass-energy fraction today vs. in the early universe?

At the present cosmic epoch (z = 0), the total mass-energy density of the universe equals the critical density ρ_crit ≈ 8.53 × 10⁻²⁷ kg/m³ (about 5.1 proton masses per cubic meter) and is partitioned into 68.47% dark energy (Ω_Λ), 26.45% non-baryonic cold dark matter (Ω_c), 4.93% ordinary baryonic matter (Ω_b), ~0.1–0.3% massive neutrinos (Ω_ν), and 0.0054% electromagnetic radiation (Ω_γ).

Physical Mechanism & Dynamics

In general relativity, every component's energy density evolves differently as the scale factor a(t) expands, governed by the fluid equation dρ/dt + 3H(ρ + P/c²) = 0. For equation-of-state parameter w = P/(ρc²), density scales as ρ(a) ∝ a⁻³⁽¹⁺ʷ⁾. Relativistic photons and early neutrinos (w = +1/3) dilute as a⁻⁴ (three factors from volume expansion plus one from wavelength redshift). Non-relativistic cold dark matter and baryons (w ≈ 0) dilute purely by volume as a⁻³.

Cosmological-constant dark energy (w = −1) maintains a constant energy density ρ_Λ as space expands. Consequently, the cosmic inventory is strongly epoch-dependent: radiation dominated for the first ~50,000 years (z > 3400), matter dominated for the next ~9.8 billion years (3400 > z > 0.3), and dark energy dominates today.

Quantitatively, this mechanism is governed by Critical Density & Dimensionless Density Parameters (ρ_crit,0 = (3 H_0²) / (8π G); Ω_i,0 = ρ_i,0 / ρ_crit,0; Ω_b + Ω_c + Ω_Λ + Ω_r + Ω_k = 1). Planck 2018 measures ω_b = Ω_b h² = 0.02237 ± 0.00015 and ω_c = Ω_c h² = 0.1200 ± 0.0012.

Observational Evidence & How Scientists Know

Two completely independent early-universe probes yield the exact same physical baryon density ω_b = Ω_b h² = 0.0224: (1) the ratio of primordial deuterium to hydrogen (D/H ≈ 2.53 × 10⁻⁵) measured in pristine high-redshift quasar absorption clouds forged during Big Bang Nucleosynthesis at t ≈ 3 minutes, and (2) the relative heights of the first and second acoustic peaks in the Planck CMB power spectrum at t ≈ 380,000 years.

In the modern universe, counting all stars and cold gas inside galaxies accounts for only ~10% of that 4.9% baryon budget. The remaining ~90% of ordinary matter has now been detected outside galaxies in the warm-hot intergalactic medium (WHIM) and circumgalactic halos via ultraviolet O VI absorption, X-ray O VII/VIII lines, and the dispersion measure of localized Fast Radio Bursts (Macquart relation).

Across reference datasets (Planck 2018 Cosmological Parameters (PR3), SH0ES Local Distance Ladder Hubble Constant), quantitative benchmarks for cosmic inventory: baryons, dark matter & λ are anchored by: Dark energy density fraction (Ω_Λ) (0.6847 ± 0.0073 (68.5%), via Planck 2018 + BAO + Pantheon SN Ia); Cold dark matter fraction (Ω_c) (0.2645 ± 0.0050 (26.5%), via Derived from ω_c = 0.1200 and h = 0.6736); Ordinary baryonic matter (Ω_b) (0.0493 ± 0.0006 (4.9%), via CMB odd/even peak ratio + BBN deuterium); Stars & cold galactic gas (Ω_*) (≈ 0.004–0.005 (~0.5% of total), via Less than 10% of all baryons are inside stars).

Uncertainties, Systematics & Open Questions

Neither the particle identity of the 26.5% cold dark matter sector nor the physical vacuum mechanism behind the 68.5% dark energy density has been detected in laboratory experiments, making 95% of the cosmic energy budget an active frontier of fundamental physics.
