Inverse-Compton Scattering & Kompaneets Physics

How does Inverse-Compton scattering turn radio and microwave photons into X-rays and TeV gamma rays?

In normal Compton scattering, an energetic X-ray photon recoils off a stationary electron and loses energy. In Inverse-Compton (IC) scattering, an energetic electron with Lorentz factor γ ≫ 1 collides with a low-energy seed photon of frequency ν₀ and transfers kinetic energy to the photon, boosting its average frequency by (4/3) γ² to ν_IC ≈ (4/3) γ² ν₀. Because total IC cooling power P_IC = (4/3) σ_T c β² γ² U_rad has the exact same form as synchrotron radiation with radiation energy density U_rad replacing magnetic energy density U_B, the ratio of IC to synchrotron luminosity equals U_rad / U_B.

Physical Mechanism & Dynamics

In relativistic jets (blazars, gamma-ray bursts, and pulsar wind nebulae), a single population of relativistic electrons produces both humps of the broadband spectral energy distribution: gyrating in magnetic field B produces radio-to-optical synchrotron photons, and Inverse-Compton scattering of either those same synchrotron photons ('Synchrotron Self-Compton', SSC) or external CMB/accretion-disk photons ('External Compton', EC) boosts them by γ² ≈ 10⁶–10⁸ into X-rays and GeV–TeV gamma rays. When the photon energy in the electron's rest frame γ hν₀ approaches m_e c² (511 keV), the scattering cross section drops from the Thomson limit σ_T to the relativistic Klein-Nishina regime, suppressing TeV scattering efficiency.

In a non-relativistic thermal plasma (such as the 10⁸ K intracluster medium of a galaxy cluster, where k_B T_e ≈ 5–10 keV ≪ m_e c²), repeated small-angle Compton scatterings are governed by the Kompaneets (1957) Fokker-Planck diffusion equation, parameterized by the Compton-y parameter y = ∫ (k_B T_e / m_e c²) σ_T n_e dl. Passing 2.725 K CMB photons through a galaxy cluster (y ≈ 10⁻⁴) upscatters ~1% of the photons by Δν/ν ≈ 4 k_B T_e / m_e c², creating the thermal Sunyaev-Zel'dovich (tSZ) effect: a flux decrement below 217 GHz and an increment above 217 GHz whose amplitude is completely independent of cluster redshift!

Quantitatively, this mechanism is governed by Inverse-Compton Boost, Power Ratio & Compton-y Parameter (⟨ν_IC⟩ = (4 / 3) γ^2 ν_0, P_IC / P_sync = U_rad / U_B, y = ∫ (k_B T_e / (m_e c^2)) n_e σ_T dl, T_B,max(Kellermann) ≈ 10¹² K). Above brightness temperature T_B ≈ 10¹² K in a compact radio core, U_rad exceeds U_B and runaway second-order SSC cooling triggers the 'Compton Catastrophe'.

Observational Evidence & How Scientists Know

South Pole Telescope (SPT), Atacama Cosmology Telescope (ACT), and Planck have discovered over 4,000 galaxy clusters out to z > 1.8 via the 150 GHz thermal Sunyaev-Zel'dovich shadow, while Chandra X-ray images of high-redshift radio galaxies (such as 3C 294 and 4C 41.17 at z = 1.8–3.8) show bright X-ray lobes where radio electrons upscatter the dense (1+z)⁴ Cosmic Microwave Background.

Across reference datasets (Planck 2018 Cosmological Parameters (PR3), SIMBAD Astronomical Database (CDS)), quantitative benchmarks for inverse-compton scattering & kompaneets physics are anchored by: Thomson cross section σ_T (6.6524587 × 10⁻²⁵ cm² (0.6652 barn), via Classical low-energy photon-electron cross section (γ hν₀ ≪ m_e c²)); Kellermann-Pauliny-Toth brightness limit (T_B,max ≈ 10¹¹·⁵–10¹² K (for incoherent synchrotron), via Violated in observations only via Doppler boosting (T_obs = δ T_int)); Thermal Sunyaev-Zel'dovich null frequency (ν_null = 217.6 GHz (λ = 1.38 mm; decrement < 218 GHz, increment > 218 GHz), via Planck, ACT & SPT redshift-independent cluster discovery).

Uncertainties, Systematics & Open Questions

Relativistic corrections to the thermal SZ spectrum at k_B T_e > 10 keV ('the rSZ effect') allow millimeter/submillimeter bolometer arrays to measure cluster electron temperatures directly without X-ray spectroscopy.
