Alfvén's Theorem, Flux Freezing & MHD Waves

Why are magnetic field lines 'frozen' into astrophysical plasmas, and why does compressing a star amplify its magnetic field by a billion times?

Because astrophysical plasmas have vast spatial scales L across which the Magnetic Reynolds Number R_m = v L / η_m ≈ 10⁸–10²⁰ is enormous, Hannes Alfvén's (1942) Flux-Freezing Theorem states that magnetic flux Φ_B = ∫ B · dA through any fluid surface is conserved as the plasma moves—meaning magnetic field lines are 'frozen into' the ionized gas! Consequently, when a stellar core or molecular cloud of radius R collapses spherically under gravity, flux conservation (B R² = const) amplifies the magnetic field as B ∝ R⁻² ∝ ρ²/³—turning a 100-Gauss stellar core into a 10¹²-Gauss neutron star—while magnetic tension B²/4π propagates transverse Alfvén waves along field lines at the Alfvén Speed v_A = B / √(4π ρ).

Physical Mechanism & Dynamics

In the MHD induction equation ∂B/∂t = ∇ × (v × B) + η_m ∇²B (where η_m = c² / 4π σ is magnetic diffusivity), the ratio of the advective term to the resistive diffusion term is the Magnetic Reynolds Number R_m = v L / η_m. Even in a moderately ionized interstellar cloud (L ~ 1 pc), the resistive decay time τ_diff = L² / η_m exceeds 10²⁰ years! Thus η_m → 0 (Ideal MHD), ∂B/∂t = ∇ × (v × B), and fluid elements attached to a magnetic field line remain on that same field line forever unless sheared into thin current sheets where reconnection occurs.

Because a magnetic field exerts both an isotropic magnetic pressure P_mag = B² / (8π) perpendicular to B and a restoring tension force T_mag = B² / (4π) along B (exactly like a plucked violin string of mass density ρ under tension B²/4π!), Ideal MHD supports three wave modes: (1) Purely transverse, incompressible Alfvén Waves propagating along B at phase speed v_A cos θ with v_A = B / √(4π ρ); (2) Fast Magnetosonic Waves where thermal and magnetic pressures act in phase at v_+ ≥ max(v_A, c_s); and (3) Slow Magnetosonic Waves where thermal and magnetic pressures act out of phase.

Quantitatively, this mechanism is governed by Ideal MHD Flux Freezing, Spherical Collapse Amplification & Alfvén Speed (Φ_B = ∫ B · dA = const ⇒ B(R) = B_0 (R_0 / R)^2 ∝ ρ^(2/3), v_A = B / √(4 π ρ) ≈ 2.18 (B / μG) (n_i / cm⁻³)^(-1/2) km s⁻¹). Shrinking a stellar core from R₀ = 10⁵ km (B₀ = 100 G) to a neutron star of R = 10 km amplifies B by (10⁴)² = 10⁸ to B = 10¹⁰–10¹² G!

Observational Evidence & How Scientists Know

On April 28, 2021, NASA's Parker Solar Probe crossed below the critical Alfvén surface at r = 18.8 R☉ (13 million km from the Sun) where v_wind < v_A and β < 0.1, directly sampling magnetic 'switchbacks' (large-amplitude Alfvén waves) heating the solar corona.

Across reference datasets (NASA/JPL Solar System Dynamics & Planetary Fact Sheets, SIMBAD Astronomical Database (CDS)), quantitative benchmarks for alfvén's theorem, flux freezing & mhd waves are anchored by: Magnetic Reynolds Number R_m in astrophysics (R_m ≈ 10⁸ (solar photosphere) to 10²⁰ (ISM / galaxy clusters), via Guarantees ideal flux freezing outside thin current sheets); Plasma Beta parameter β_plasma (β = P_gas / P_mag = (8 π n k_B T) / B^2 = (2 / γ) (c_s / v_A)^2, via β ≪ 1 (solar corona, magnetospheres) vs. β ≫ 1 (stellar interiors)); Parker Solar Probe Alfvén surface crossing (r_A ≈ 13–19 R☉ (v_sw > v_A ≈ 100–150 km/s, April 2021), via First spacecraft to enter the sub-Alfvénic solar corona (Kasper et al. 2021)).

Uncertainties, Systematics & Open Questions

In weakly ionized molecular cloud cores (ionization fraction x_e ≈ 10⁻⁸–10⁻⁷), neutral H₂ molecules are not directly tied to magnetic field lines and slowly slip past ions via 'Ambipolar Diffusion' (Mestel & Spitzer 1956), allowing supercritical cores to shed magnetic flux and collapse into stars.
