Type Ia Thermonuclear Supernovae

How does a carbon-oxygen white dwarf explode as a Type Ia supernova without leaving a remnant behind?

A Type Ia supernova is the complete thermonuclear disruption of a carbon-oxygen white dwarf triggered by mass transfer or merger in a binary system. Runaway fusion of ¹²C and ¹⁶O into iron-peak nuclei synthesizes ~0.5 to 0.8 solar masses of radioactive Nickel-56 (⁵⁶Ni → ⁵⁶Co → ⁵⁶Fe) and intermediate-mass elements (Si, S, Ca), releasing ~10⁵¹ erg of kinetic energy that unbinds the entire star and produces a standardizable peak luminosity M_B ≈ -19.3.

Physical Mechanism & Dynamics

Classified spectroscopically by the complete absence of hydrogen lines and the presence of a deep blueshifted Silicon II (6150 Å, rest 6355 Å) absorption trough near maximum light, Type Ia supernovae occur because electron degeneracy pressure in a white dwarf is independent of temperature (P_deg ∝ ρ⁵/³ or ρ⁴/³). When carbon fusion ignites—either as the white dwarf approaches the 1.38 M☉ Chandrasekhar limit via subsonic deflagration-to-detonation transition (DDT), or in a sub-Chandrasekhar (~0.9–1.1 M☉) 'double detonation' initiated by a surface helium-shell flash—the degenerate core cannot expand to cool, driving an explosive runaway within ~1–2 seconds.

Because the exploding white dwarf has a miniature initial radius (R_WD ≈ 3,000–5,000 km), adiabatic expansion cools the initial shock heat long before the ejecta become optically thin at ~18 days. The optical light curve is powered entirely by gamma-ray and positron deposition from the radioactive decay chain ⁵⁶Ni (half-life 6.08 days) → ⁵⁶Co (half-life 77.2 days) → stable ⁵⁶Fe (Arnett's Rule, 1982). Mark Phillips (1993) discovered that events synthesizing more ⁵⁶Ni have higher temperatures and higher iron-group opacity, causing their light curves to both peak brighter and decline more slowly over the first 15 days (Δm₁₅(B)).

Quantitatively, this mechanism is governed by Arnett's Rule & Phillips Light-Curve Width–Luminosity Relation (L_peak ≈ ε_Ni M(⁵⁶Ni) e^(-t_peak / τ_Ni) ≈ 2 × 10⁴³ (M_⁵⁶Ni / M☉) erg s⁻¹, M_B(max) = -19.25 + 0.78 (Δm₁₅(B) - 1.1)). Connects peak bolometric luminosity directly to synthesized ⁵⁶Ni mass (~0.6 M☉) and standardizes Type Ia absolute magnitudes to ±0.12 mag (~6% in distance).

Observational Evidence & How Scientists Know

In 2014, ESA's INTEGRAL satellite directly detected the nuclear gamma-ray decay lines of ⁵⁶Ni (158, 812 keV) and ⁵⁶Co (847, 1238 keV) from SN 2014J in M82 (d = 3.5 Mpc, Churazov et al. 2014), measuring 0.62 ± 0.13 M☉ of freshly forged ⁵⁶Ni and providing direct nuclear proof of the thermonuclear white dwarf paradigm.

Across reference datasets (SH0ES Local Distance Ladder Hubble Constant, JWST / MAST Science Archive & Mission Documentation), quantitative benchmarks for type ia thermonuclear supernovae are anchored by: Standardized peak absolute magnitude (M_B ≈ -19.25 ± 0.03 mag (L_peak ≈ 1.5 × 10⁴³ erg/s), via SH0ES HST/JWST Cepheid calibration + Pantheon+ sample); Synthesized ⁵⁶Ni & total iron yield (M(⁵⁶Ni) ≈ 0.4–0.8 M☉ (median ~0.6 M☉ per explosion), via Peak bolometric flux & INTEGRAL 847/1238 keV ⁵⁶Co gamma-ray lines); Ejecta kinetic energy & velocity (E_kin ≈ 1.0–1.4 × 10⁵¹ erg; v_ej ≈ 10,000–15,000 km/s, via Blueshifted Si II λ6355 & Fe II/III spectral profiles); Sub-luminous (91bg) vs. Over-luminous (91T/Iax) (M_B = -17 (SN 1991bg) to -19.6 (SN 1991T); Type Iax leaves bound zombie WD, via ZTF, ASAS-SN & Rubin LSST transient taxonomy).

Uncertainties, Systematics & Open Questions

The relative contribution of the 'Single-Degenerate' channel (white dwarf + non-degenerate donor) versus the 'Double-Degenerate' channel (merger or collision of two white dwarfs, supported by the complete absence of a surviving companion star in the SNR of SN 1006 and SN 1572/Tycho) and 'Double-Detonation' sub-Chandrasekhar models is probed by early-time UV shock hooks and JWST nebular-phase [Ni II]/[Co III] spectra.
