Baryon Acoustic Oscillations (BAO)

What are Baryon Acoustic Oscillations and how do they act as a cosmic standard ruler?

Baryon Acoustic Oscillations (BAO) are spherical sound waves that propagated through the relativistic photon-baryon plasma for the first 380,000 years until photons decoupled at the drag epoch (z_d ≈ 1,060). This froze an overdense shell of baryons at a known comoving sound horizon radius r_d ≈ 147.1 Mpc (~480 million light-years) around every initial density peak, imprinting a statistical excess of galaxy pairs separated by 147 Mpc at all redshifts.

Physical Mechanism & Dynamics

Consider an initial point-like overdensity of dark matter, baryons, and photons after inflation. Cold dark matter remained stationary at the center while radiation pressure drove a spherical sound wave of coupled photons and baryons outward at c_s ≈ c / √3 ≈ 0.57c. At photon decoupling, radiation pressure vanished and the acoustic shell stalled at comoving radius r_d ≈ 147.1 Mpc.

Gravity subsequently pulled galaxies to form both at the central dark matter peak and along the 147-Mpc spherical shell. Measuring the BAO feature transverse to the line of sight yields D_M(z) / r_d, while measuring it along the line of sight (in redshift Δz) yields c / [H(z) r_d].

Quantitatively, this mechanism is governed by Comoving Sound Horizon and BAO Geometric observables (r_d = ∫_(z_d)^∞ [ c_s(z) / H(z) ] dz ≈ 147.09 ± 0.26 Mpc ; Δθ_BAO = r_d / D_M(z)). Along the line of sight, the redshift separation of the BAO peak is Δz_BAO = r_d H(z) / c.

Comoving Sound Horizon and BAO Geometric observables

r_d = ∫_(z_d)^∞ [ c_s(z) / H(z) ] dz ≈ 147.09 ± 0.26 Mpc ; Δθ_BAO = r_d / D_M(z)

Along the line of sight, the redshift separation of the BAO peak is Δz_BAO = r_d H(z) / c.

Observational Evidence & How Scientists Know

First detected in 2005 by SDSS and 2dFGRS, the BAO peak has been mapped across seven redshift bins by BOSS, eBOSS, and DESI to sub-percent precision, providing the primary 'inverse distance ladder' geometric anchor for cosmic expansion history.

Across reference datasets (Planck 2018 Cosmological Parameters (PR3)), quantitative benchmarks for baryon acoustic oscillations (bao) are anchored by: Drag-epoch sound horizon r_d (147.09 ± 0.26 Mpc (comoving), via Planck 2018 calibration at z_d = 1059.9); Plasma sound speed c_s (~0.57 c (~170,000 km/s), via c / √[3(1 + 3ρ_b / 4ρ_γ)]); BAO detection significance (>10σ in SDSS/BOSS and DESI, via Two-point galaxy correlation function ξ(s) peak); DESI Year-1 redshift span (z = 0.1 to z = 2.3 (>6 million spectra), via BGS, LRG, ELG, QSO, and Lyα forest tracers).

Uncertainties, Systematics & Open Questions

Nonlinear gravitational clustering slightly blurs the BAO peak at low redshift, which surveys reverse using density-field 'BAO reconstruction' algorithms to recover near-linear precision.
